Commonly performed in cosmetic dentistry, tooth
whitening is the procedure of lightening dark colored teeth. Dark pigments in
foods, beverages, and cigarette smoke can bind to your enamel, staining the
surface of your teeth. Many teeth whitening systems are available, including
whitening toothpastes, over-the counter gels, strips and trays, and whitening
agents obtained from a dentist.
Here are some tips to help maintain your pearly whites:
- Avoid the consumption of or exposure to products that stain your teeth. If
you're concerned, you might try using a straw when you drink dark-colored
juice or cola to minimize its contact with your teeth.
- Brush or rinse immediately after consuming stain-causing beverages or foods.
- Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and
floss at least once daily to remove plaque. Use a whitening toothpaste to remove
surface stains and prevent yellowing. Use a regular toothpaste the rest of the
time.
- All toothpastes help remove surface stains
because they have mild abrasives. Some whitening toothpastes contain gentle
polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal
effectiveness.
