What is Vicodin used for?
- Vicodin is a combination of acetaminophen and
hydrocodone is used to relieve moderate to severe
pain.
How should you take this medication?
- Take this medication by mouth, as directed by
your doctor. You may take this drug with or without
food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to
reduce stomach irritation.
- If you are using the liquid product, measure the
liquid form of this medication with a special
dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table
spoon.
- The dosage is based on your medical condition
and response to therapy. Pain medications work best
in relieving pain before it becomes severe. Once the
pain becomes intense, the medication is not as
effective in relieving it.
- Drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily to help
prevent constipation while you are taking Vicodin.
- If you miss a dose of Vicodin , take it as soon
as possible. If it is almost time for your next
dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your
regular dosing schedule.
General Precautions with Vicodin
- Before taking this medication, tell your doctor
or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to other
narcotics (e.g. codeine), or if you have any other
allergies.
- Vicodin can be habit-forming. If you take
Vicodin over a long period of time, you can become
mentally and physically dependent on it, and you may
find the drug no longer works for you at the
prescribed dosage
- This medication should not be used if you have
certain medical conditions. Before using this
medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. use
caution engaging in activities requiring alertness
such as driving or using machinery.
- This product contains acetaminophen which may
cause liver damage. Daily use of alcohol, especially
when combined with acetaminophen, may increase your
risk for liver damage.
What are the possible side effects of Vicodin?
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of
these signs of an allergic reaction: hives;
difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips,
tongue, or throat.
- Blurred vision; constipation, difficulty
breathing, Nausea, vomiting, constipation,
lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, mental or
mood changes may occur. If any of these effects
persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist
promptly.
