Trazodone

Brand Names: Desyrel

What is Trazodone used for?

   

  • Trazodone is used to relieve depression and depression that sometimes occurs with anxiety.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take Trazodone shortly after a meal or light snack. Take each dose with a full glass of water.
     
  • Sometimes Trazodone must be taken for up to 4 weeks before you begin to feel better . Do not stop taking trazodone without checking with your doctor.
     
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is within 4 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

General Precautions with Trazodone

  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to trazodone.
     
  • Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Trazodone may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: personal or family history of bipolar disorder, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, blood pressure problems.
     
  • Studies have not been done in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have shown that trazodone causes birth defects and a decrease in the number of successful pregnancies when given in doses many times larger than human doses.

What are the possible side effects of Trazodone?

  • If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking trazodone and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives)
     
  • Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome blurred vision, constipation; decreased appetite, dizziness, drowsiness; dry mouth, headache, muscle pain, nausea, nervousness; sleeplessness, stuffy nose, swelling of the skin, tiredness.
