Prozac

What is Prozac used for?

   

  • Prozac is in a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Prozac is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Panic Disorder.

How should you take this medication?

  • Prozac is taken by mouth, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.
     
  • Do not break, chew, or open an extended-release capsule. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body.
     
  • Try to take the medicine at the same time each day.
     
  • If you miss a dose, take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule.

General Precautions with Prozac

  • Before taking Prozac, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: history or family history of psychiatric disorder, history or family history of suicide attempts, liver disease, kidney disease, stomach bleeding, or diabetes.
     
  • This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy, use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
     
  • This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
     
  • Never take Prozac if you are taking Mellaril, used to treat schizophrenia. Also, do not take Mellaril within 5 weeks of stopping Prozac.

What are the possible side effects of Prozac?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     
  • Uncommonly, discoloration or mottling of tooth enamel has been reported with long-term use and/or large doses of fluoride topical. Notify your dentist or doctor if you notice changes in the appearance of your teeth.
