What is Protonix used for?
- Protonix is used for the short-term healing of
severe inflammation and erosion of the esophagus
which may be caused by the backward flow of gastric
acid from the stomach into the esophagus.
How should you take this medication?
- Protonix may be taken with or without food. Take
protonix with a full glass of water.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or
chew the tablet.
- It may take several days before this medicine begins
to relieve stomach pain. To help relieve this pain,
antacids may be taken along with this medication.
- If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as
soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for
your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to
your regular dosing schedule.
General Precautions with Protonix
- Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual
or allergic reaction to pantoprazole.
- Do not stop taking protonix even if you begin
to feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the
condition is fully treated.
Protonix has not been studied in pregnant women. Before taking this
medicine, discuss with your doctor the benefits and
risks of using Protonix during pregnancy.
If you have a liver condition, make sure the doctor is
aware of it. A dosage adjustment may be needed for
anyone with serious liver disease.
What are the possible side effects of Protonix?
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of
these signs of an allergic reaction: hives;
difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips,
tongue, or throat.
- The most common side effects are headache, nausea,
diarrhea, or stomach pain.
