What is Prednisone used for?
- Prednisone is in a class of drugs called
steroids. Prednisone is used to treat conditions
such as arthritis, blood disorders, breathing
problems, immune system diseases, and severe cases
of asthma.
How should you take this medication?
- Take this medicine by mouth with food or milk to
lessen stomach upset.

If you are taking one dose daily, take that dose
before 9 a.m. if possible, to follow the bodys natural
cycle.
- If you miss a dose of prednisone , take it as soon as
possible. If it is almost time for your next dose,
skip the missed dose and go back to your regular
dosing schedule.
General Precautions with Prednisone
- Before taking prednisone, tell your doctor or
pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have
any other allergies.
- If you have an underactive thyroid gland or cirrhosis
of the liver, your doctor will probably need to
prescribe prednisone for you at a lower-than-average
dosage.
- Carry some type of medical identification that will let
others know you are taking prednisone in the case of
an emergency.
- Prednisone makes you more susceptible to illnesses,
especially if you take it for an extended period of
time. Prevent infection by avoiding contact with
people who have colds or other infections.
Do not stop taking prednisone suddenly if you have
been taking it for a few weeks. Your doctor may want
you to reduce gradually the amount you are using
before stopping the medicine completely.
What are the possible side effects of Prednisone?
- If you experience any of the following serious
side effects, stop taking prednisone and seek
emergency medical attention or contact your doctor
immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty
breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your
lips, tongue, or face), severe headache or blurred
vision.
- Continue to take prednisone and talk to your doctor
if you experience difficulty sleeping, fatigue or
dizziness, increased appetite, increased sweating,
indigestion, mood changes, or nervousness.
