Niacin

 

Generic Name: Niacin
Brand Names: Nicobid, Nicolar

What is Niacin used for?

   

  • Niacin is used for lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol or of triglyceride in the blood of certain patients. It is prescribed, along with a low-fat, low cholesterol diet, to reduce blood cholesterol levels and lower the chance of repeated heart attacks.

How should you take this medication?

  • Niacin is taken once a day at bedtime after a low-fat snack. Do not take Niacin on an empty stomach, taking niacin on an empty stomach increases side effects.
     
  • If you miss a dose of Niacin , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

General Precautions with Niacin

  • Before using this product, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: a history of liver or gallbladder problems, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), ulcer, diabetes, glaucoma, bleeding problems or active bleeding, gout, low blood pressure, heart problems, or if you are having a heart attack.
     
  • Niacin may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Niacin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
     
  • Diabetes patients - Niacin may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.

What are the possible side effects of Niacin?

  • Check with your doctor if any of these side effects persist or become bothersome: diarrhea, dry skin, headache, itching, stomach upset, flushing/warmth in the face and neck
