Naproxen

Brand Names: Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn

What is Naproxen used for?

   

  • Naproxen is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is used to relieve some symptoms caused by arthritis, such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, muscle aches, and joint pain.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water. To prevent stomach upset, take this medication with food, milk, or an antacid. Taking it with food may not lower the risk of stomach or bowel problems.
     
  • If you miss a dose of Naproxen and you are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Go back to your regular dosing schedule.

General Precautions with Naproxen

  • Naproxen may cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Naproxen with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
     
  • Before taking naproxen, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication.
     
  • This medicine may cause stomach bleeding. Taking it in high doses or for a long time, smoking, or drinking alcohol increase the risk of these side effects.

What are the possible side effects of Naproxen?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     

  • Check with your doctor if any of side effects persist or become bothersome: constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, heartburn, nausea, stomach upset.
