Meclizine

Brand Names: Antivert

What is Meclizine used for?

   

  • Meclizine is an antihistamine. Meclizine is used to treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in your body.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take Meclizine by mouth with or without food, take each dose with a full glass of water.
     
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
     
  • For vertigo, your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

General Precautions with Meclizine

  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to buclizine, cyclizine, or meclizine.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: breathing problems, glaucoma, prostate problems, or seizure disorder.
     
  • Meclizine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.
     
  • Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Antivert.

What are the possible side effects of Meclizine?

  • Stop taking meclizine and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, or hives).
     
  • Continue to take meclizine and talk to your doctor if you experience: blurred or double vision, constipation, diarrhea, difficult or painful urination, dizziness, dryness of mouth, nose, and throat; fast heartbeat; headache, loss of appetite; nervousness, restlessness.
