What is Lexapro used for?

  • Lexapro is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Lexapro is used to treat anxiety and major depressive disorder.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
     
  • Try to take the medicine at the same time each day.
     
  • It may take 4-6 weeks or longer before you start feeling better. Do not stop using lexapro without first talking to your doctor. You may have unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this medication suddenly.
     
  • If you miss a dose, take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule.

General Precautions with Lexapro

  • Never take lexapro if you are taking another drug used to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, or if you have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Lexapro close in time to an MAOI can result in serious and fatal reactions.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, including: history or family history of psychiatric disorder, history or family history of suicide attempts, bleeding or clotting problems, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease.
     
  • You may have an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior at the start of treatment with an antidepressant medication, especially if you are under 18 years old.
     
  • This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness, such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.
  • This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Inform your doctor immediately if you are or think you might be pregnant.

What are the possible side effects of Lexapro?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives, difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     
  • A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
     
  • More common side effects may include: nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, constipation, decreased appetite, decreased sex drive, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, ejaculation disorder, fatigue, flu like symptoms, headache, impotence, insomnia, runny nose, sleep problems.
