• Imitrex is used to treat migraine headaches. It is also used to treat cluster headaches.

How should you take this medication?

• Take Imitrex by mouth, with or without food. Use Imitrex as soon as the headache pain begins, if there is no improvement in your symptoms.

General Precautions with Imitrex

• Imitrex may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
   
• Imitrex should not be used to prevent or reduce the number of migraine headaches you have. If you have a headache that is different than your usual migraine headaches, check with your doctor before using Imitrex .
   
• Drinking alcoholic beverages can make headaches worse or cause new headaches to occur. People who suffer from severe headaches should avoid alcoholic beverages, especially during a headache.

What are the possible side effects of Imitrex?

• Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome: burning, dizziness, drowsiness, feeling of heaviness, temporary flushing, muscle aches; nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, tight feeling in the head, tiredness, weakness.
