Fosamax

 

Generic Name: Alendronate
Brand Names: Fosamax

What is Fosamax used for?

  • Fosamax is in the group of medicines called bisphosphonates. It is prescribed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease, in postmenopausal women. It is also used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis.

How should you take this medication?

  • Fosamax is effective only if taken on an empty stomach. Take the fosamax tablet first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything. If you take an fosamax tablet only once a week, take it on the same day each week.
  • Take each alendronate tablet with a full glass of water.
     
  • Swallow Fosamax whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
     
  • Do not eat or drink anything other than plain water.
     
  • If you miss a dose, do not take a missed dose later in the day, Instead, skip it and go back to your regular schedule the next morning.

General Precautions with Fosamax

  • Before taking Fosamax, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to other bisphosphonates.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: trouble swallowing, stomach/intestinal disorders.
     
  • Do not drink alcohol, smoke, or use other tobacco products while taking Fosamax .It is important to have enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet.
     
  • For at least the first 30 minutes after taking an fosamax tablet, do not lie down or recline; do not eat or drink anything other than plain water; and do not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids.

What are the possible side effects of Fosamax?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     
  • Stop using fosamax and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • chest pain

  • difficulty or pain when swallowing

  • vomit that looks like coffee grounds

  • new or worsening heartburn

  • bone, or muscle pain

  • jaw pain, numbness, or swelling
