What is Metronidazole used for?

  • Metronidazole belongs to a class of antibiotics known as nitroimidazoles. Flagyl is an antibacterial drug prescribed for certain vagina, stomach, and skin  infections.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take this medication on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a meal.
     
  • This medication may be taken with food or a full glass of water or milk to prevent stomach upset.
     
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body.
     
  • If you miss a dose of Flagyl take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

General Precautions with Metronidazole

  • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to metronidazole.
     
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver problems, nervous system disorders, blood disorders.
     
  • Metronidazole may cause dryness of the mouth, an unpleasant or sharp metallic taste, and a change in taste sensation. For temporary relief of dry mouth, use sugarless candy or gum, melt bits of ice in your mouth.
     
  • Do not drink alcohol  while taking this medication and for at least 3 day after finishing this medicine.

What are the possible side effects of Metronidazole?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     
  • This drug may cause urine to darken in color. This is harmless.
     
  • Two serious side effects that have occurred with Flagyl are seizures and numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, hands, and feet. If you experience either of these symptoms, stop taking the medication and call your doctor.
