What is Doxycycline used for?

    

  • Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections and to help control acne.

How should you take this medication?

  • Doxycycline is usually  given by injection into a vein by a health care professional, usually once or twice daily or as directed by your doctor. It works best if it is used at the same time each day.
     
  • If your doctor directs you to switch to medicine that you take by mouth, be sure you understand how to take it. You may take this medication with or without food. Do not take the medication with milk or other dairy products.
     
  • If you miss a dose of Doxycycline , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

General Precautions with Doxycycline

  • Tell your doctor if you have ever any allergic reaction to any ingredient in Doxycycline or another tetracycline.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, lupus.
     
  • Doxycycline should not be used in children younger than 8 years old, it may cause permanent tooth discoloration and other problems.

  • This medication may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Doxycycline .
     
  • Doxycycline  is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It could cause harm to the unborn baby, including permanent discoloration of the teeth later in life.

What are the possible side effects of Doxycycline?

  • Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
     
  • If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly: diarrhea, difficulty swallowing; headache, loss of appetite; nausea, sensitivity to sunlight, skin inflammation in the anal and genital areas, vomiting.
