What is Dilaudid used for?
- Dilaudid is in a group of drugs called narcotic
pain relievers. Its used to treat moderate to severe
pain.
How should you take this medication?
- Take the pill form of this medicine with a full
glass of water. Do not crush, chew, break, or open an
extended-release tablet or capsule. Swallow the pill
whole.
- Drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily to help
prevent constipation while you are using
dilaudid.
Ask your doctor about ways to increase the fiber in
your diet. Do not use a stool softener without first
asking your doctor.
- Measure the liquid form of
Dilaudid with a special
dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table
spoon.
General Precautions with Dilaudid
- Dilaudid may be habit forming. Do not take more
than the recommended dose or use for longer than
prescribed without checking with your doctor.
- This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause
blurred vision. Use caution while driving, using
machinery, or doing any activity that requires
alertness or clear vision. These effects may be worse
if you take it with alcohol.
- Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist
that you are using this medication.
What are the possible side effects of Dilaudid?
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell
your doctor or pharmacist promptly: constipation,
dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision
nausea, sweating, vomiting.
