What is Demerol used for?
- Demerol, a narcotic analgesic, is used to treat
moderate to severe pain.
How should you take this medication?
- Demerol is usually administered as an injection
at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. You
may take this drug with or without food.
- To take long-acting hydromorphone capsules do not
chew, crush or dissolve. You may take this drug with
or without food.
To take the syrup form of Demerol take this
medicine mixed with a half glass of water to lessen
the numbing effect of the medicine on your mouth and
throat.
- If you miss a dose of Demerol , take it as soon as
possible. If it is almost time for your next dose,
skip the missed dose and go back to your regular
dosing schedule.
General Precautions with Demerol
- Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications
that cause drowsiness while taking Demerol . Demerol
will add to the effects of alcohol and other
depressants.
- This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Make sure
you know how you react to this medicine before you
drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be
dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert and
clearheaded .
- Do not suddenly stop taking Demerol without first
checking with your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of Demerol?
- Check with your doctor if any of these
common side effects persist or become bothersome:
constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, loss
of appetite, nausea, sweating, vomiting.
