Clonazepam

 

Generic Name: Clonazepam
Brand Names: Klonopin

What is Clonazepam used for?

  • Clonazepam is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Clonazepam is used to treat seizure disorders and panic attacks.

How should you take this medication?

  • Take this medication by mouth 2 or 3 times a day, or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition.
     
  • Take each regular oral tablet with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole.
     
  • It is important to take clonazepam regularly to get the most benefit.
     
  • If you miss a dose, if it is within an hour after the missed time, take the dose as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until later, skip the dose and go back to your regular schedule.

General Precautions with Clonazepam

  • Before taking Clonazepam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to other benzodiazepines; or if you have any other allergies.
     
  • This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: narrow angle glaucoma, severe liver disease.
     
  • Carry an ID card at all times that says you take Clonazepam if it is used for seizures.
     
  • Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Clonazepam will cause drowsiness and may cause dizziness.
     
  • Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking clonazepam.

What are the possible side effects of Clonazepam?

  • If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking clonazepam and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
  • an allergic reaction

  • worsening seizures

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • hallucinations or severe confusion

  • changes in vision
     

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle pain, excessive hair growth or loss, change in sexual desire, weight change, poor coordination, sore gums, depression or constipation. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
