Generic Name: Ciprofloxacin
Brand Names: Cipro

What is Cipro used for?

  • Cipro is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections.

How should you take this medication?

  • Cipro can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.

  • Take each dose with a full glass of water. Drink several extra glasses of fluid each day while you are taking cipro.

  • If you are taking the oral suspension, be sure to shake the bottle vigorously for 15 seconds before each dose. Swallow without chewing the microcapsules in the suspension.

  • Do not crush, chew or break the extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body.

  • Do not take cipro with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice.

  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.

General Precautions with Cipro

  • Do not take cipro with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. You may eat or drink dairy products or calcium-fortified juice with a regular meal, but do not use them alone when taking ciprofloxacin.

  • This drug may make you dizzy or lightheaded; use caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.

  • Taking cipro can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid exposure to sunlight, sun lamps, or tanning beds.

What are the possible side effects of Cipro?

  • Stop using ciprofloxacin and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

  • Stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, headache, vision changes or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
