What is Cephalexin used
for?
- Cephalexin is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin
antibiotics. Cephalexin is prescribed for bacterial
infections of the respiratory tract, the middle ear,
the bones, the skin, and the reproductive and urinary
systems.
How should you
take this medication?
- Take this medication by mouth usually every 6 or
12 hours, or as directed by your doctor. You may
take this medicine with food if stomach upset
occurs. If you are taking the liquid form of
medicine, shake the bottle well before each dose.
- Take cephalexin with a full glass of water.
- Take this medication for the entire length of
time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may
get better before the infection is completely
treated. Cephalexin will not treat a viral infection
such as the common cold or flu.
- if you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon
as you remember. If it is almost time for your next
dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at
your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take
extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
General Precautions with Cephalexin
- Do not use this medication if you are allergic
to either penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics in
any form, consult your doctor before taking
cephalexin.
- Before using this medication, tell your doctor
or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:
kidney disease, intestinal disease.
- Studies have not been done in humans. However,
most cephalosporins have not been reported to cause
birth defects or other problems in animal studies.
What are the possible side effects of Cephalexin?
- Stomach upset, headache, fatigue, dizziness, or
diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist
or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist
promptly.
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of
these signs of an allergic reaction: hives;
difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips,
tongue, or throat.
