What is Celexa used
for?
- Celexa is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Celexa
tablets and oral solution are used to treat mental depression.
How should you
take this medication?
- Celexa is taken by mouth, with or without food,
exactly as prescribed by your healthcare
professional.
- It may take 4 weeks or longer before you start
feeling better. Do not stop using Celexa without
first talking to your doctor. You may have
unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this
medication suddenly.
- If you miss a dose of Celexa , skip the missed
dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do
not take 2 doses at once.
General Precautions with Celexa
- Before taking Celexa, tell your doctor if you
have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to
citalopram.
- Contact your doctor promptly if you have any of the following side effects,
especially if they are new symptoms or if they get worse: mood changes, anxiety,
panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, agitation, aggressiveness, severe
restlessness, mania, thoughts of suicide
or hurting yourself.
- Do not take Celexa with or within 14 days of
taking an MAO inhibitor. Do not take an MAO
inhibitor within 14 days of taking celexa. If you
do, you may develop extremely high blood pressure or
convulsions
- This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy, use caution engaging in activities
requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Avoid alcoholic
beverages.
- Studies have not been done in pregnant women.
However, studies in animals have shown that
citalopram may cause decreased survival rates and
slowed growth in offspring when given to the mother
in doses many times higher than the usual human
dose.

What are the possible side effects of Celexa?
- Get emergency medical help if you have any of
these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or
hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face,
lips, tongue, or throat.
- Nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, diarrhea,
drowsiness, dizziness, trouble sleeping, dry mouth,
muscle/joint pain, fatigue, or yawning may occur. If
any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your
doctor or pharmacist promptly.
