Varicocele

 

 

Definition

    

     A varicocele is a widening of the veins along the spermatic cord. This cord holds up a man's testicles.  It is most common in men between 15 and 25 years of age.

Causes

     It is caused by inadequate valves within the veins along the spermatic cord.

Symptoms

  

  • Usually, it does not cause any symptoms.

  • Scrotal swelling

  • There can be dull pain in the scrotum.

  • Visible tortuous veins in the scrotum

  • A large varicocele can be painful.

  • It can cause infertility.

Screening and Diagnostics

  • Examination:

- A painless, tortuous mass is palpated along the spermatic cord in the standing position.

Treatment

   

  • Conservative treatment such as a scrotal support

  • Surgical tying off of the varicocele to relieve pain or to allow normal development of the testis

Complications

  • Infertility

  • Disparity in testicular size

Prognosis

     It is usually harmless and requires no treatment.
