Scabies

Introduction

Scabies is a skin infection caused by a tiny insect about 0.3 mm long

Causes

Scabies is most common among people who live in overcrowded conditions, and whose ability to practice good hygiene is limited. Scabies is highly contagious through skin to skin contact. Although the mite doesn't live very long away from people, it can be contracted by sleeping in the bed of someone who has the problem.

Symptoms

Intense itching is the most common symptom of scabies. This usually occurs at night, these can occur anywhere on the body except the face.

Treatment

  • Bedding and clothing should be cleaned and set aside for 48 hours.
  • A one-time application of Permethrin 5% cream for 8 to 12 hours is recommended.
  • Lindane cream is more toxic than Permethrin and may pose dangerous side effects in children due to potential neurotoxicity.
  • Benzyl benzoate lotion may also be applied.
