Molluscum Contagiosum

Introduction

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection of the skin that causes small pearly or flesh-colored bumps. It can appear anywhere on the body, and affects both children and adults.

Causes

Molluscum contagiosum results from an infection by the molluscum contagiosum virus. This virus spreads via skin contact and person-to-person..

Symptoms

The small, round, indented bumps are usually about 3 mm to 5 mm in size. They may appear alone or in groups. They are most often found on the trunk, face, eyelids or genital area. In children, bumps usually appear on the trunk, face, and arms.

Treatment

The bumps will disappear without treatment in 10 to 24 months. Because molluscum spreads easily, doctors often recommend medical treatment, especially for adults. Treatment may include removal of the papules by. Medications used to remove warts also may be helpful in removing the papules.

Daily creams such as Tretinoin and Cantharidin work well.
Stronger medications like oral Griseofulvin also work well.
Lesions can also be frozen using liquid nitrogen.
