Introduction
Known medically as Pyelonephritis, pyelonephritis is
an inflammation of one or both kidneys with variable
manifestations. It may be acute, relapsing or chronic.
The complications of this disorder are hypertension,
chronic infection, renal insufficiency and renal
failure. The course is extremely variable but
typically the chronic disease progresses extremely
slowly, with patients having adequate renal function
for more than 20 years after onset.
Causes
Pyelonephritis
can be caused by any of the organisms that cause lower
urinary tract infection. Conditions such as pregnancy,
diabetes, cancer, kidney stones, and abnormalities of
the urinary tract can lower your ability to fight off
the bacteria that cause kidney infections
Symptoms
Kidney infection may cause one or more of these
signs and symptoms:
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Frequent urination
- Strong, persistent urge to urinate
- Headache
- Burning sensation or pain when urinating
- Abdominal pain or pressure
- Cloudy urine with a strong odor
- Pus or blood in your urine (hematuria)
- Flank pain -- pain
in the middle or sides of the back
- Abdominal pain, over the bladder located in the
middle-lower part of the abdomen
- Foul odor
Treatment Antibiotics are the first line of treatment for
kidney infection, the most important measures
are to eliminate the bacteria with antibiotics given
orally or intravenously and to correct any
obstruction. When obstruction cannot be eliminated and
recurrent infections persist, then long-term
antibiotic therapy may be required
