Introduction
Dry eye occurs when
there is insufficient tear production in the eye,
this causes pain and discomfort in the eyes.
Causes
There are many different causes of the conditions
collectively referred to as dry eye syndrome,
including:
- Aging
- Environment (dry climates, air conditioning,
pollution, wind)
- Wearing contact lenses for long periods of
time
- Antihistamines
- Beta-blockers
- Medication side effects
- Alcohol
- Dry eyes can also be associated with arthritis
and accompanied by a dry mouth.
Symptoms
Some of the most common symptoms experienced by
dry eye patients:
- Scratchy, gritty eyes
- Aching or sore eyes
- Smarting or burning eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Eyes tire easily, particularly noticeable from
reading or using a computer
- Excessive mucus discharge
- Fluctuating vision
- Blurred vision, particularly first thing in
the morning
Treatment Wetting drops called
artificial tears may be used for treatment.
Lubricating ointments may help more severe cases.
Some of the best-known treatments are: lubricants,
punctal plugs, topical steroids, warm compresses,
protective eyewear.
